I began studying martial arts when I was 14 when I enrolled in a school for Goju Ryu Karate, which I studied and competed in for 4 years. In Japanese “Goju” means “hard/soft”. This principle of pursuing a perfect balance of hardness and softness in this style of Karate originated from the Chinese Yin/Yang Theory. I tried to find people teaching or studying Tai-Chi Chuan. At that time there was little written in English on the subject and few students to be found in Chicago.

In 1973 I began my freshman year at Columbia College here in Chicago and began learning Yang Style Long Form with Hubert Lui at Columbia College Dance Center. Hubert Lui was one of the first teachers of Tai Chi Chuan in Chicago who taught openly who spoke English. I studied with Mr. Lui, assistant taught, and finally taught myself at Columbia College Dance Center until 1978. Since then I have other teachers most notably, George Ling Hu, Grandmaster Shang Deng Shang, Grandmaster T.T. Liang and Master Jian Hua Guo.

In recent years I have begun to learn Ba Qua Zhang and Xing Yi Chuan, which together with Tai Chi Chuan are the three martial arts that make up the “Internal School” of Chinese Martial Arts.

I have experience teaching a broad spectrum of people, young and old, infirm and athletic. I particularly enjoyed teaching a group of psychologists at their retreat at The Samuel A. Kopp Center, helping them to get out of their heads and into their bodies. In recent years I have worked with therapists at Lydia House here in Chicago, which is a home for troubled teenagers, using Tai Chi Chuan to help them break habits of anger response. I am currently working at finding support to introduce Tai Chi Chuan in Chicago public schools. To me Tai Chi Chuan and the other internal martial arts represent a leading edge in human physical culture.

I currently teach at the Chicago Moving Company space in Hamlin Park Fieldhouse. Class info is posted on their website as well as mine.
